Tasmania, The Tasman, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Hobart

The Tasman, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Hobart has a rich history dating back to the 19th century. The original building was constructed in the 1800s and operated as a wool storage facility and trading house. In the early 1900s, the building was converted into a hotel, known as the Hobart Hotel. The hotel became a popular destination for visitors to Hobart, with its convenient location near the city’s waterfront and other attractions.

Over the years, the hotel underwent several renovations and changes in ownership. In 1989, the Hobart Hotel was acquired by the Regent International Hotels chain, which invested heavily in refurbishing and expanding the property. The hotel was renamed The Regent of Hobart and became one of the city’s most prestigious hotels.

In 2000, The Regent of Hobart was rebranded as The Henry Jones Art Hotel, with a focus on showcasing the work of local Tasmanian artists. The hotel’s interior was designed to highlight the building’s history and heritage, with many of the original features, such as the timber beams and sandstone walls, preserved and incorporated into the design.

In 2019, The Henry Jones Art Hotel was acquired by Marriott International and rebranded as The Tasman, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Hobart. The hotel underwent a major renovation, which included the addition of a new wing with 64 guest rooms, a rooftop bar, and a new restaurant. The hotel’s interior was updated with a modern and sophisticated design, while still preserving many of the historic features that make it unique.

As for the highlights of The Tasman, it is considered one of Hobart’s top luxury hotels, offering exceptional service and amenities, as well as stunning views of the harbor and the city. The hotel has won numerous awards for its design, including the Australian Institute of Architects Tasmanian Chapter’s Heritage Architecture Award and the World Luxury Hotel Awards’ Luxury Art Hotel Award.

However, there have also been some lowlights in the hotel’s history, including a fire in 2007 that caused significant damage to the building. The fire started in the hotel’s kitchen and spread to the roof, causing extensive damage to the upper floors. The hotel was closed for several months while repairs were made, but it was eventually restored to its former glory.

  1. Hi Hotel Odyssey! Love your video and thank you for staying at The Tasman. It is worth noting that The Tasman is a different hotel entirely to The Henry Jones (which is about 1km away). It features 152 guest rooms across three eras of architecture (Georgian, Art Deco, and Contemporary) and fortunately for the hotel, has not had a fire in its history. The hotel also offers valet parking on property for guests.
I hope this helps! Frances – Director of Marketing at The Tasman, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Hobart.
